Nicotinic acid is the form of vitamin B3 that, at high doses, lowers triglycerides and raises HDL ('good') cholesterol. It also causes the wellknown harmless 'niacin flush'.
WHO IT'S FOR
Adults with mixed dyslipidaemia under medical supervision, and people at risk of B3 deficiency (maize-based diets, alcohol use).
HOW TO TAKE
As directed by a clinician. Start low, take with food, and avoid hot drinks or alcohol at dose time.
GOOD TO KNOW
Flushing and itch are common. High doses can raise liver enzymes, blood sugar and uric acid. Avoid in liver disease, active ulcer and gout; monitor diabetics.
